Muted Minimal Jazz – Jakob Bro – Returnings

This is a minimal post on relatively minimal muted jazz. I’m constantly on the hunt for non-schlocky slow tempo music that contains space and distance between notes/sounds. Maybe it’s my age or maybe I’ve listened to so much music in my life my brain is reaching its “note quotient” and is moving into conservation mode for its remaining capacity.

Regardless, check out Jakob Bro – Returnings on the wonderous ECM Records label. Soothing and patient sketches of intimate jazz.

Sincerely yours,

Tulipomania Remix of Figure Walking’s “Blue World”

Check out this remix as a Magnet exclusive download courtesy of Philly band Tulipomania and producer/engineer Richard Hartline.

Tulipomania’s Tom Murray has recently been wading into the remix waters to great effect.

Sonoscopia – Disposofónicos

Sonoscopia, along with the Crónica label, form a long-standing epicenter of experimental music in Porto, Portugal, which is quickly being overrun by tourism, gentrification, and high rent – with all of the accompanying devastating artistic and cultural side effects.

Sonoscopia’s recent beautifully designed box set (and pay what you want digital download) is the culmination of a year’s worth of curation and celebration of DIY experimental music production and live performance.

To me, it represents more than just a cool experimental music release. It represents an organic anarchistic sonic antibiotic for the exponentially expanding din of vacuous aural propaganda emanating from an exponentially expanding commercial infection.

Sincerely yours,

Dave Wesley – Portugal

Glenn Gould Gathering

Spotify’s recent recommendation for me to dig this new compilation of combined classical and experimental electronic mavericks is “spot” on.  (Sorry for that.)

As my ears age, my listening tastes gravitate toward more minimal classical and solo instruments, along with experimental ambient and electronic music.  So, this release is a perfect storm for me.

It’s not often that I keep a release on repeat for a whole workday, as I did with this.

That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.

Dave Wesley – Portugal

Exotic Psychedelic Mix from Carla dal Forno

Nothing much to say other than “listen to this”.

Carla dal Forno is an Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, currently based in Berlin. She is a member of the groups F Ingers and Tarcar, and formerly cult Melbourne outfit Mole House.  Her output on one of my favorite labels, Blackest Ever Black is scintillating.

Best regards,

Dave Wesley

Mix – Adventures In Sound And Music hosted by Astrud Steehouder 20190131

Super cool selection across an eclectic constellation of genres by Astrud Steehouder (Paper Dollhouse) and illustrious The Wire magazine.

I learned something.

Sincerely,

Dave Wesley

Arvo Party

This is cool semi-ambient music from Belfast with an artist name that makes it onto my top producer/band names list with Dumpster Juice and R.E.O. Speed Dealer.

Stop for the name. Stay for the music.

Repost – Basic Channel – Resident Advisor Label of the Month

Yeah. This great article with interviews deserves re-posting. Gods among men.

Enough said.

Lo-fi Ambient Music From Thomas Fehlmann

The prolific and steadily relevant Thomas Fehlmann treads into ambient lo-fi territory with this very cool soundtrack release.

The Overload SubReddit – Left-field and Lo-fi House and Techno

I’ve been really getting into Reddit lately as an alternative to the usual suspect social media outlets.  One of my favorite subreddits is The Overload, which describes itself as:

“A sub for unconventional club music. Ebm, noise, house, lo-fi music, techno, hardware jams, acid, chicago house, detroit techno Labels like L.I.E.S, Hessle Audio, Raster Noton, Token, Cititrax, Downwards, Ilian Tape, Detund, Crème Organization, Opal Tapes, Clone, Dance Mania, Lobster Theremin, Minimal Wave, Pinkman, The Trilogy Tapes, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Murder Capital, Perc Trax, Construct Re-Form, Mathematics, Mannequin, Killekill, Crimes of the Future, brokntoys, Tabernacle Records…”

I created a post which asked for recommendations for artists/labels similar to Huerco S (one of my favorite producers) and received a ton of wonderful responses from the community.  I assembled the below Spotify playlist based on those recommendations.

It’s a deep rabbit hole.  Bring your miner’s helmet.

Yours truly,

Dave Wesley – Somewhere in Northern Portugal
