Release – Steve Earle & The Dukes – So You Wannabe an Outlaw
Wesley Mayhem, June 22nd 2017
This album is the real deal. Instant classic.
Growing up in Etter, Minnesota, in the 70s, in the middle of nowhere… in a house in the middle of a field (which was perfect for UFO landings)… with a father that cranked outlaw country music on a kick ass quadraphonic hi-fi… even for a rocker like me, it was hard to avoid some country music flavor and influence.
As I matriculated and attended college, my evolving indie music tastes led me to Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt and other birds of a feather, which I listened to a bit into my 40s, but haven’t dusted off for many years now, as my tastes have become simultaneously more experimental and retro. And, somehow the country slice hasn’t quite made it into my definition of retro…
This morning, as I perused my Feedly news feeds, I happened onto a positive review of Steve Earle & The Dukes – So You Wannabe an Outlaw and launched Spotify to discover a fantastic hard-driving and heartfelt release that is now on repeat on this sunny Summer day and is well on its way to become my album of the Summer of 2017.
Highly recommended. Put on a flannel shirt, take a dip of Copenhagen (if it still exists), and take note that not everything is in decline in the good ol’ US and A… and for the love of Christ, TURN IT UP.
